Media law for entrepreneurs: Increasing your news organization’s sustainability by covering your legal needs

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

This media law session is designed to acquaint news entrepreneurs with an understanding of their legal rights and opportunities for news gathering; ways they can avoid costly defamation and copyright claims; and some of the important legal considerations that should be considered when establishing and managing a news organization.  Most importantly, the panel will provide news executives with need-to-know information on where they can find all-important legal resources to answer all their operational questions.

Session audience and takeaways:
  • This session is for all news entrepreneurs who are faced with thorny legal questions.
  • They will learn the basics of newsgathering (public record, access, can-we-record) law as well as ways to avoid liability in publishing news articles of significant public concern. Besides these core First Amendment issues, news executives will be introduced to legal concepts on how best to organize your organization to avoid liability, to ensure appropriate non-profit governance, and how to manage independent contractor relationships.
