As independent news startups, we all have a fantastic and uncommon opportunity to redefine how journalism works, without being weighed down by how things have always been done. Sisi Wei, editor-in-chief of The Markup and previously co-executive director of OpenNews, and Angilee Shah, editor-in-chief of Charlottesville Tomorrow, which is reimagining local news in central Virginia, will be in conversation about how leaders can design journalism organizations to take care of people, and ultimately, remake the news. By not assuming value in any existing processes, these two leaders are creating impactful journalism by running newsrooms in which journalists can thrive.
Session audience and takeaways:- This session is for all journalism industry leaders and newsroom leaders.
- Some takeaways from our session will include how to value your team’s work, and not undervalue it the way the industry pressures us to; the need for support for journalism at the local level; how to let local and those close to the topics and people they cover lead; how news economies need to change by strengthening economies of local newsrooms rather than seeking to stay apart from them while you work
