Building for community: Lessons from orgs working in underserved communities

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

How is an “underserved” community-centered approach different, and how do we approach it differently? We’ll talk about the specific ways in which we work with “underserved” communities, and how that differs from traditional journalism. We’ll talk about how impact and revenue look in our community-centered approach.
Session audience and takeaways:
  • This session is for established outlets trying to expand reach within their community that are being underserved by them and other news outlets and news entrepreneurs wanting to start an outlet specifically to serve an underserved community.
  • Session attendees will learn how to identify who can help them understand their community better, how to think about their audience differently, defining what impact looks like, and how to balance making money with establishing trust.
